Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and most widespread fraternal organizations, with roots tracing back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries in Europe. It is built on principles of brotherhood, moral uprightness, and charitable work, symbolized by the tools of stonemasons and enriched by allegory and ritual.
Freemasonry was introduced to India during British colonial rule in the early 18th century. Lodges were initially established to serve British officers and expatriates but gradually expanded to include Indian members. Over time, Indian Freemasonry developed its own identity and traditions.
The Grand Lodge of India was formally established in 1961, marking a significant milestone in Indian Freemasonry by bringing together various lodges under one sovereign body. The GLI serves as the governing Masonic authority in India, overseeing the practices, rituals, and administration of lodges across the country. It symbolizes the unity and growth of Freemasonry among Indian members.
The Regional Grand Lodge of Southern India operates under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of India, focusing on the southern states. The RGLSI facilitates the coordination of Masonic activities, supports local lodges, and fosters fellowship within the southern region. Its establishment reflects the regional diversity within Indian Freemasonry and addresses specific cultural and administrative needs
